Mark Massara

San Francisco, California

Out surfing when he's not in the courtroom, Massara is the founder of the Surfing Attorneys' Association and the legal mind behind the environmental group Surfers' Environmental Alliance. On behalf of the Surfrider Foundation, he negotiated the second largest penalty ever collected for Clean Water Act violations. He has won legal battles that not only fined polluters but also forced them to clean up their effluent and prove that it does not harm kelp, sea urchins, and other specific marine life.

"When you're surfing, you're in it. Surfers are environmentalists whether they wanna be or not. Some people think we can be dismissed as surfers fighting for our right to surf, but we're fighting for clean water for everyone."
