The
Cave at Blue Creek (update 11/18/94)
I returned to Blue Creek in late May with John Biuchanan
and one other. We mapped the connection from the other entrance to the lower
cave, passing through an area with only 2 feet of airspace; the lower entrance
was dry! The next evening it rained about 3 inches... Millions of wingless
ants grew wings and flew all night in vast concentrations, truly bizarre.
We were shut out of the cave river because of the flooding, so mapped in the
dry section John Wyeth and I found in March. This connected back in two places
to known passage, unfortunately-- they are easy ways in and will trash the
passages, eventually. The day before John Wyeth showed up from Costa Rica
the hut was broken into and much of my equipment was stolen, particularly ropes and climbing gear. Without rope we couldn't explore farther in the cave,
so left for an area farther north. Blue Creek is now 8 km long [it was only
3 km during Jason V].
