JASON VII: Adapting to a Changing Sea

The NR- 1 Submarine

A Dive on the NR-1
April 10, 1996

by gene carl feldman

On Wednesday, April 10, 1996, I was lucky enough to participate in an all day dive to the bottom of the sea on the Navy's nuclear research submarine, the NR-1. Along with me on the dive was Jonathan Howland of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Below are links to a detailed account of the dive which is illustrated with photographs taken by a remarkable digital camera and features sounds actually recorded during the dive. In addition to showing you some of the features of this incredible submarine, I hope to give you a glimpse of what life is like for the crew members of the "world's finest deep submersible".

The story is divided into five parts:
Rendevous
at sunrise
"...upon a
floating island"
Onboard
the NR-1
It's the
little things
The world's
largest aquarium
