James Carlton

Mystic, Connecticut

He has led the fight against alien species. A marine ecologist, he has explored how nonlocal species affect ecosystems and may displace native species, particularly in the San Francisco Bay area. His work on how species are transported from place to place in ships' ballast water is of extreme importance for maintaining natural ecosystems and preserving native species.
