ANOTHER YEAR OF JASON BEGINS...
Howdy everyone from the big island of Hawaii!!!! This is Mike Durbin and I will try and keep up the Jason Logs this year, and HOPEFULLY keep everyone informed as to what we are doing... This first log is early because of the NASA support prior to the Jason shows. I will start out this year by telling you about the equipment we are using. Please feel free to comment on anything via office vision and I will try adjust the log accordingly if possible. (Mike Durbin WZ1MMB) (Before anyone comments I can spell, thanks to word check, but tyoing is another matter... )
HERE WE GO!!
After a year of preparation the first equipment arrived in Hilo Hawaii on Feb. 7, 1995. The route took the equipment by truck from Plano to Los Angeles, plane from Los Angeles to Honolulu, barge to Hilo, and then by truck again to the Kilauea observatory. The station was set up approx. 50 feet from the edge of the Caldera. Smoke can be seen coming from the Caldera floor and signs of activity can be seen everywhere.
This location is to be the home of the transportable earth station for the next 10 days before it is moved to the final location near the ocean. The system is being used in advance of the Jason show to allow NASA to do science testing of the MARSICOV vehicle via satellite from NASA Ames in California. The system this year is the newly developed EDS Disaster Recovery Transportable (DRT). The system consists of multiplex equipment (IDNX 20), a PABX (Meridian), and satellite systems to support the interconnect back to Plano. This system allows EDSNET to be taken anywhere and configuration and system management to be accomplished from the Plano IMC. The DRT allows EDS to connect customers to the EDS network via satellite in any configuration of Data or Voice. This year the Jason network will be connected via the DRT and all data, voice, fax, and remote control will be routed via the EDSNET in Plano.
The JASON system will be set up near an active lava flow as it enters the ocean. This site is in the Hawaii Volcanoes park on the big island of Hawaii. The exact site location keeps moving, as the flow is forcing us to select new locations daily. This is, after all, an active volcano!!!!
I better sign off for now.
Oh! by the way if you all think this is a plush assignment remember this is Winter in Hawaii. High the last few days have been in the upper 60's and the lows in the middle 40's and it has misted or rained every day since Feb.7th. (IS THERE ANY SUN IN HAWAII??? I don't know...)
