Lava Log

February 19,1995

WE ARE PACKED TO MOVE....

Pele is moving the lava at approx. 200 meters a day and is 300 meters from the road behind Jasonville. Today we rolled all the cables and power connections into bundles (We just got them set up you know..) and are ready to move in the morning. I will let you know..... Looks like we are going to set up down the road a mile or so...

JASON DATE 02/19/1995.2 -

Well just before we were heading for dinner and I typed the above my radio said "MOVE TIME". So tonight we moved about .6 miles from the old site. Pele decided she didn't want us where we were. Picture 1000 park visitors parked in your parking spot watching the new lava flow and being told they had to leave now!!!! Cars, people (with respirators on), tucks, bicycles, and earth stations all moving in the dark. We finished the move in 3 hours and parked all the Jasonville equipment for the night. The site we are in now may only be temporary, as the lava flow is being studied and a final (maybe) site is selected tomorrow.

The view was tremendous!! The lava pool inside the active crater has risen to within 30 feet of the top edge and glows against the night sky like a city with only red lights... The entire side of the mountain looks like rivers of bright red water flowing to the sea, and there are places along the shore that glow against clouds of steam (contain toxic gases and Hydrochloric acid). To make the view complete mama nature showed us an almost full moon rising over the Pacific ocean just to the right of the Pele's display. Well I guess I better go and get some sleep for tomorrow is going to be another adventure....
