Dear Oklahoma,
Hello!! This is Derek Martin, the Student Argonaut in Hawaii. I am writing to tell about my experiences thus far.
Everything is going just perfect. We arrived on Saturday evening and went straight to dinner. We were all tired from the flight, and the fact that we landed at eight o'clock (4:00 Hawaii time) didn't make it any easier. We met most of the crew that night at dinner and then came straight to Volcano and went to bed. The next morning, we got up bright an early at about 1:30AM and went down to the ocean to the broadcast site. The day went very well. It was rehearsal day. We all got to meet Dr. Ballard, he is a very nice man. After rehearsal, due to the jet lag, we were ready for bed by about five o'clock. The next morning was the first morning of the broadcast. Naturaly some of us were a little nervous. However it went very well. At Astronomy we got to talk to Dr. Spencer who was located at the top of Mauna Kea. That was real cool. That afternoon, we went too the Thurston Lava Tube and then to the Visitor's center for a relaxing time. For dinner, Dr. Ballard ate with us. We all had a good time talking and getting to know him. This morning we again got up at about quarter to two and went down and this time I was getting to go to Geology with Dr. Mattox. It was really neat to see an actual lava flow. I spent the entire broadcast portion of the day there and learned a whole lot about the lava and how it works! Well I gotta go!!!
