One of the objectives of this year's JASON Project is to gain a better understanding of the land beyond the small confines of the Hawaiian archipelago. With the aid of NASA infra-red observatories and additional telescopes, the JASON Argonauts and scientists hope to explore the rocky landscape of Jupiter's moon Io. The following image (available as a .gif file on the JASON homepage) was found by Mr. Paul Varsho, a Teacher Argonaut and observed by Student Argonauts. These images are not reproductions of Io, but of the sun's surface. With filters and a telescope we are able to view the sun's surface and look for sunspots, large storms on the sun's surface in addition to the moons of Jupiter.
