Today was another wonderful day for us JASON Argonauts. We arrived at the lava fields at 4:00 a.m. to find once again an awesome display of Pele's lava flow. There were outrageous lava cascades this morning to accompany the Hawaiian sunrise. With every broadcast, the time draws nearer for our experiences with JASON in Hawaii to come to a close. This is sad for most of the members of our team. We have become friends with each other, with the production crew, with the JASON Foundation people, and with EDS crew.
The cascade of lava I mentioned earlier occurred just after dawn. The beautiful red ball of the sun rose into the blue sky -- up to a large round cloud, which shielded the sun from our eyes and sent bright rays upward and outward from the cloud. I kneeled down facing the lava flow and could see the picturesque sky scene in the background. I took many pictures of this sight!! I also felt a connection with the beauty of this experience. Well, on the next break, I took a few minutes to call home. Kyle, one of my sons, answered the phone; he excitedly told me that my daughter, Alison, had given birth to her first baby -- name is Brooke Sara. Everything was great. Brooke had been born on March 2nd, the day that the volcano on Io had eruptrd so heavily. My family had just had a very hard time reaching me due to the time change and the schedule we keep. Anyway, Dr. Ballard mentioned it after the end of the broadcast on the biology station where I was helping; he turned the show to me so that I could welcome Brooke to Earth. That was cool of him to do this.
The rest of the day went very smoothly. This was only my second time for the biology station, so I was happy to get the experience again with Dr. Steve Montgomery. These caterpillars were amazing. I got to operate the "bug cam" so that we could watch the litter guys strike for food. I hope you see (or have seen this) on one of the broadcasts. Tonight the Week Two Argonauts arrived. We went to visit with them while they were eating their dinner, and had a wonderful time filling them in on how the week progressed. We are exhausted, so I must sign off. I hope you respond to me so that my class and I can communicate with you. My address (postal and e-mail) is the following:
