Dr Stephen Mattox

Prior to being a science writer and a lecturer at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Stephen Mattox worked as a park ranger at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a volunteer geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and a consulting geologist in Hawaii and Utah. Dr Mattox received his undergraduate degree form Indiana University, Indianapolis, Indiana, and a Ph.D. in geology from Northern Illinois University.

His mission during JASON Project VI is to investigate the distribution of glass particles in the steam plume generated by lava entering the ocean. He would like to determine how much glass is in the plume and if people in nearby areas are inhaling the glass particles.
