Spiders of the World

Submitting Your Spider Data

To participate in this exercise you must first go looking for spiders in your area and count the number you find from each spider family. You will need to write down the numbers of spiders you find in each family so that you can enter the information here. Master 1.5h "Number of Spider Families" in the JASON Curriculum is a convenient form on which to record your data. You can also print out a copy of the online Spider Data Entry Form to take with you.

Once you have collected your spider data, you must submit it to the JASON Project Spider Database. The online form is one way to submit your data, but your system must be able to support FORMS to use this page.

To use the Spider Data Entry Form you will be asked to do the following:

  1. Enter your name and e-mail address
  2. Tell us where your data were collected by:
  3. If not part of a JASON PIN, use the map presented to you to locate the place where your spider observations were made.
  4. Once you are satisfied that the location you have indicated on the map agrees with where you actually made your observations, you can enter the name of your school or organization and submit this information
  5. You will now be presented with a form listing all the spider families. Enter the number of spiders of each family you found. If no spiders of a given family were found, just leave that entry blank.
  6. Enter whatever additional comments you feel might be important in helping us interpret your observations in the space at the bottom of the form.
  7. Preview your observations to make sure that all the numbers you have entered are correct.
  8. Submit your entry.
  9. It will take about one minute to process your data and draw a new set of graphs based on your results.
  10. When your results have been tabulated, you may look at the graphs for all data submitted from your location or from everyone participating in the Spiders of the World exercise.

We are currently developing a method for receiving spider family data that is sent using electronic mail. If your system does not support FORMS, you will soon be able to type your spider data into an electronic mail message and send it to the JASON Project Spider Database. Data received via e-mail will be incorporated into the database just as if it were typed into the online Spider Data Entry Form. Check back soon for more information and instructions.
