Subject: Io Light Curve Activity and Brightness Answered

Teachers of the JASON Curriculum:

For those of you who have notice Jude Kesl's question about the
Io's brightness scale I will try to answer the question. The
brightness scale is the vertical axis of the light curve graph on
master 1.4 Light Curve. It is really the brightness of Io in the
infrared spectrum. The numbers represent FLUX measured in Watts/square
meter.

For those of you who will be covering the material on the volcanoes on
Jupiter's moon, Io, you may want to considered doing the following
activity. Have your students on the below chart graph the original Io
light curve data points surplied by the astronomer Dr. John Spencer.
You should end up with a light curve similar to the graph found on
Master 1.4e A Light Curve (longitudes 180 through 0 will not be
duplicated as on the master). The big difference will be that the
students have constructed the 1989-90 curve themselves. The peak in
the light curve indicates there was an active violent volcano at
longitude 310 during 1989-90. This volcano was probably Loki!

With this year's data appearing on Internet, your students can
construct a second light curve for 1995 and compare it to the 1989-90
curve to determine if the volcano Loki is still active or are there new
active volcanoe s.

Good Luck with the astronomy activity

Here are the original Io light curve data points from 1989-90 that are in the
graph in the curriculum, for the students to plot. Volcanic heat flux is
measured in Watts per square meter radiated between 4.5 and 5.5 microns
wavelength, approximately, averaged overthe whole surface of Io.

Hope this is useful,
Dr. John Spencer
