Conch Program

Our last day in the field, both the Florida Bay team and the Crocodile team joined in releasing conchs. Bob Glazer and Kevin McCarthy, our conch specialists here at KML, have been raising the conchs for almost two years! The final step in their part of the conchs life is releasing them into the wild. Bob and Kevin tag these conchs in order to monitor their survival in the wild.

Our plan was to release the cultivated conchs and then go searching for wild conchs to tag. Unfortunately, the sea was rough and the visibility in the water was very low. Because of the water conditions, we ended up only releasing the conchs, and even that was tough.

We ended our "last day of science" with a very un-scientific party! The food, once again, was great. Our party gave us a chance to talk to the scientists that we worked with all week and it also gave us a chance to thank them. We said farewell with poems, awards and thank-yous all around. We have exchanged addresses and plan on keeping in touch with all the people who taught us so much, not only about Florida Bay but also about ourselves.
