Marine Engineering:
The Story of Surveying the Edge of the Sea

• What tools do marine engineers use for surveying underwater habitats and for bathymetry?
• How do these tools work?
• How have increases in human population affected marine engineering?
• Will people live in or on the water in the future?

Research Location: SSV Carolyn Chouest, backup Key Largo

Technique: Sonar images of seafloor to determine the structures and layers of sediments.

Tools: Core samples taken from the NR-1, Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), Sonar, echo sounding, still cameras, manipulators for coring, depth finder, video imagining, side-looking sonar, and bottom profiling sonar.
