Like all ships, the Silas Bent requires a skilled crew of officers and crew to keep things running smoothly. On this cruise, in addition to our team of oceanographers and technicians, there are over 80 contracted ships crewmembers.

The Bent has a Captain and several officers who direct the crew and command the ship. The officers include the Captain, the First and Second Mates, the Communications Officer, The Chief Engineer and the Nurse.

The Captain oversees all ship operations and coordinates all work with the Navoceano Senior Scientist. The First and Second Mates navigate and command the ship in shifts along with the Captain. The Communications Officer mans the Radio Shack and coordinates all ship-to-shore communications. The Chief Engineer keep the engines and turbines running and makes sure the heat and air conditioning are functioning correctly. He also makes sure we have enough safe, pure drinking water by keeping the seawater distillation unit working.

The Ship's Nurse checks the quality of our drinking water everyday and also mans a small hospital or medical room. He or she is trained to treat a wide variety of illnesses and emergencies ranging from broken bones and heart attacks to allergic reactions.
