We spend five days in Yokohama loading the ship with our scientific equipment and making sure everything works. Our electronic technicians have spare parts for everything. Once we have left port, we will not be able to go shopping when something breaks down. We must have enough equipment and parts aboard so that they can fix anything that may break during our trip.

The chief steward arranges for food and supplies to be delivered to the ship.He has to make sure there is enough food stowed aboard in the freezers and chillers to feed all of us up to four meals a day for over 30 days. We all hope he finds lots of good things to eat here in Japan. Good meals are very important for morale at sea. The chief steward has a very important job.
