The crew consist of the Boatswain, the Chief Steward and several deckhands and stewards. The Boatswain, (pronounced "bosun") directs all deck activities that have to do with using the cranes or other heavy equipment. He is the "job boss" for the deckhands, and directs them based on the Captain's or the Senior Scientist's commands. The deckhands operate the cranes, load pallets of supplies aboard ship, secure all hatches, deploy and stow the gangway and the lines in port.
The Chief Steward plans all meals, prints out daily menus, obtains all food supplies in port, and directs the stewards in their cooking and housecleaning activities. The Stewards cook and serve the meals and clean all staterooms and restrooms daily and all public areas and laboratories weekly. The Chief Steward also operates the ship's store for a few hours every week for people who forgot to buy things like toothpaste, deodorant, laundry soap and soda while in port.
