JASON VII
Adapting to a Changing Sea

Guide to Programming

Research in the Florida Keys will take place during two expeditions. The first, in January 1996, will focus on organisms that inhabit various shallow water habitats in Florida Bay and the Everglades. A team led by Dr. John Hunt will study various organisms that inhabit Florida Bay while Dr. Frank Mazzotti and Laura Brandt will investigate the ecology of the American crocodiles. During the second expedition in April, we will be looking at deeper water habitats off Key Largo. A team led by Dr. Robert Ballard, will use remotely operated vehicles and submersibles to map geologic structures. Dr. Bob Hueter, Dr. Jim Bohnsack, and Dr. Jerry Wellington in the undersea laboratory AQUARIUS will lead teams studying sharks, fish, and corals respectively.

These two expeditions will yield video programming in two parts, including pre-recorded material featuring the work of the January Expedition (Shallow Water Investigations - Part I) and live telepresence broadcasts from the site of the April Expedition (Deeper Water Investigations - Part II). The live broadcasts will offer a "you are there" experience to students and teachers at the JASON Project Primary Interactive Network Sites (PINS) and JASON Network Sites (JNS).

The JASON Classroom Network offers supplemental programming for JASON VII, including a series of three Professional Development programs designed to help teachers use the JASON VII Curriculum. There will be several ways to participate in April Expedition via the Internet. Additional information and interactive curriculum investigations are available through JASON Online Systems.

The schedule below describes resources and programming that will be available for JASON VII:

January

The JASON VII Curriculum is available from Primary Interactive Network Sites (PINS) or from the JASON Foundation for Education.

Teacher Professional Development Workshops are offered by many of the PINS.

JASON Online Systems provides additional information about the JASON Project and the upcoming expedition. In addition, students and teachers can use the Internet to participate in JASON Discussion Groups or collaborative Student Investigations described in the JASON VII Curriculum.
